Webinar #1 : What Is a Mini-Lesson? — The power of explicit instruction and active engagement
Learning to read does not come naturally. Reading requires a complex set of skills that must be taught to students systematically and explicitly, especially in DLI classrooms. In this session, the presenters will share and discuss how to develop standards-aligned learning objectives for each lesson, and how to chunk the information for direct instruction. During each lesson, it’s also critical to actively engage students and check for understanding. Teachers will share detailed lesson plans with sample exit tickets, and videos of classroom practice. The participants will learn how to plan effective mini lessons and use evidence-based instructional strategies to support the development of reading skills in their students.
Webinar #2 : Guided Reading — Deepening Love of Reading while Creating Independent Readers
Guided Reading has become very popular in elementary schools. But does it work in a DLI program? In this session, the presenters will share and discuss how it might fit into the structure of second language learning in which learners do not have adequate oral language, vocabulary, or the tools to sound out words. Teachers will offer concrete examples through videos of classroom instruction as well as other supplementary materials to show how to adapt and apply guided reading structure. The participants will learn how to plan effective guided reading lessons that support students to read increasingly challenging books independently while keeping meaning and love of reading front and center.
Webinar #3 : Best Strategies for Differentiation and Small Group Instruction
Differentiation means tailoring instruction to meet individual needs. Having the just right learning resources can minimize classroom management challenges, and also effectively maximize the learning outcome. Data-driven planning could be essential to make this process more effective! In this session, the presenters will share and discuss the best strategies for whole group and small group differentiation. The participants will have the opportunity to view different models of literacy small groups for guided and independent practice. In addition, teachers will share their tips and tricks to help students develop agency to stay on task.
Webinar #4 : Standard-aligned instruction to develop students’ oral proficiency in Mandarin
Language educators all want to help their students develop a high level of oral language proficiency. While many DL and WL programs have realized the importance of systematic reading and writing curriculum, schools and teachers need an articulated scope and sequence, and a comprehensive structure with teaching resources for speaking instruction as well. In this session, the presenters will showcase how they maximize students talk in the 2nd language classrooms, and reinforce the accuracy of oral language output without discouraging student talk. The participants will walk away with sample lessons for them to try out in their classroom for students at different oral proficiency levels.
